Artist Bio:
Steven M. Cummings is a photographer and documentarian who has a studio in Northeast, Washington, D.C. He was born in Okinawa, Japan in 1965 and traveled through Europe with his military family as a child. Cummings depicts black life in Washington, D.C., and shoots almost exclusively in black and white, making this color photograph a distinct departure and a marked moment in time. This self-portrait is held in the collection of Big Bear Cafe, a longstanding cultural anchor in the District of Columbia. His photographs are also archived in the collection of the Anacostia Community Museum.

An Emmy Award–winning documentarian, Cummings is the subject of ‘A Chocolate Lens,’ a film that reflects on his decades-long commitment to capturing the everyday life and evolving landscape of Black Washington.
