Artist Bio:

Sherman Fleming is a visual and performance artist who has created both singular and collaborative projects since 1978. Known chiefly for his performance practice, Fleming has also supported other artists in realizing their work, serving as Assistant Director at the Montpelier Cultural Arts Center in Laurel, Maryland, and as Program Manager for Mural Arts Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. He has taught art and art history at Washington International School, Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

In 2013, Fleming was awarded an Individual Artist Grant by the Franklin Furnace Fund and was selected as an artist-in-residence for the African American Museum in Philadelphia’s Art and Social Justice Initiative, in partnership with Rush Arts Philadelphia. In 2024, he was recognized as a Philadelphia Cultural Treasure and has also held a residency with the Ellen Harvey Foundation in Venice, Italy.

THUG is a series of collage-based digital images that combine figurative, graphic, and textural elements to explore themes related to symmetry and direction. Each composition integrates these diverse components in a way that highlights balance and movement, inviting viewers to engage with the layered meanings embedded within the work.
